Lohmeyer, in Lord of the Temple, suggests that the parable of the vineyard, husbandman, and the tenants should be understood more specifically as referring to the temple of God, and the tenants are the priests, the keepers of God's house (p. 44). This fits, he argues, better with the context, a narrative that began with the cleansing of the court of the Gentiles in the temple. The conclusion of the parable is that the lord of the vineyard "will.. give the vinyard to others." Lohmeyer also points out that a golden vine adorned the Temple signifying its ownership by God.
