Trinitarians on Trinity Sunday

This is Trinity Sunday and like all of the other celebrations we have is in some sense redundant. Every day is a celebration of all that God is and has done. Every day is an enormous party for the Trinity. The great white moon, the forgiveness of sins, the oceans roaring, the cross and the empty tomb three days later, the beasts of the field, the water of baptism, the way of men and women all over this planet laughing, eating, inventing things, the bread and wine of the Eucharist. All of these realities are true every day, and they are all true because of the Triune God. These glories are fundamentally his glories. He delights in them and glories in them even more than we do. But we’re humans who forget, and therefore we must plan to take special notice of these good gifts of God. We plan to celebrate the incarnation, the baptism of Jesus, his passion, resurrection and ascension. We plan these dates not because they are more true then than any other day, but because we’re people made in the image of God who delight in planning to make a big deal about the good gifts of God. Today we celebrate the fact that our God is not a solitary monad. We are not Unitarians; we are Trinitarians. Our God is not a great cosmic hermit in the sky. Our God is a communion, a fellowship of love and joy and laughter. Our God is a family of three persons, and therefore because this is true, the world is the way it is, and we are the way we are. What a blast, what a gift, what grace and mercy! So put away your complaints now. Yes, there is sin and wickedness and hurt in this world where sin still ravages lives, but you have been given all these things and Jesus. Put away your bitterness; stop pointing fingers. Just put it down and come, worship the Triune God. He is your life; he is your grace; he is your mercy; he is your joy. Put down your hard hearts, put down your gripes, put down your critical spirits, put down your pickiness and come, worship the Lord.
